SELANGOR Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari today said the landslide yesterday in Taman Melawati was not due to over-development.
He said the last time planning permission was issued for the area was over 10 years ago.
"Overflowing water from the drain triggered a landslip which led to the landslide. The overflow had been an ongoing issue for several days before the incident," he told a press conference after visiting the site of the landslide this morning.
Amirudin said the authorities have issued a notice to carry out maintenance works on the drain and upgrade access routes to the hill.
"I was also informed that the area is a popular recreational spot for residents and we have temporarily closed it until the area is safe," he said.
The landslide at about 10 am yesterday following a heavy downpour affected four houses on Jalan E, Taman Melawati.
The affected homes were evacuated and residents were placed at the Dewan Orang Ramai Jalan E5 until further notice.
Amirudin also urged landowners to ensure proper land maintenance and appealed to local authorities to conduct regular monitoring and alert landowners when necessary.
"Owners need to be proactive in maintaining their land. In this case, we have contacted the landowner and issued a notice to maintain the road and drains," he added.
On compensation for affected residents, Amirudin said it will be up to the group to pursue the private landowners.
However, he said the developers and private landowners should be proactive in taking responsibility to prevent this from happening again. - October 16, 2024
