PARTI Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has called for local-based parties to take the lead in the upcoming state election, emphasising that "external" parties may not fully understand the aspirations of Sabahans.
Its acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said local parties must be at the forefront of political representation, particularly in defending the rights and interests of Sabah’s people.
“One of the key priorities in preparing for the 17th state election (PRN) is to ensure that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) contests as many seats as possible,” he said during the party’s 39th convention in Penampang today.
“This is vital to prevent national parties, which may not fully grasp the people’s aspirations here, from gaining dominance.”
PBS is a component of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) which currently partners with Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state government.
Gunsalam did not explicitly name the national-based coalitions but referred to the two super-political powers.
He added that seat negotiations between GRS component parties must be thorough to avoid vote splitting, which could benefit opposition parties.
“A well-planned approach will ensure no vote splitting or internal divisions that might give the opposition an advantage. GRS must stand united against external challenges. If we maintain this unity, it is not impossible for us to secure a majority of seats,” he said.
PBS will defend the seven seats it won in the previous state election in 2018, he said, adding that the party also aims to expand its influence in traditional constituencies where it has a strong support base.
“PBS is ready to expand its reach in the upcoming election, particularly in areas where we have established strong machinery and loyal support. As a party representing all ethnic groups, our diversity will be our strength,” he said.
He emphasised that the upcoming PRN would be a pivotal moment for Sabah, urging local parties to rise to the occasion to restore stability and progress.
“The 17th PRN will be a decisive battle for the future of Sabah. With meticulous preparation and a solid strategy, we are confident we can restore the stability and development that all Sabahans dream of,” Gunsalam said.
He urged PBS members to stay focused and committed as the state heads toward what could be one of the most critical elections in its history.
