SABAH PKR has raised concerns over the rising online gambling addiction among vulnerable communities in the state.

Party information chief Razeef Rakimin said small shops, doubling as top-up hubs, are encouraging online gambling in poorer areas, with reports surfacing from towns like Tuaran, Semporna, Tawau, and Keningau.

“This issue is spreading even in Kampung areas. Some shops look ordinary but serve as online gambling hubs, where locals top-up and gamble on their phones,” Razeef said during a party briefing.

He noted that poorer residents, unable to access casinos, are resorting to mobile gambling.

He said the top-up hubs were operating under the guise of sundry shops or motorcycle workshops.

Besides youths, even older men and women are seen gambling on phones in public places, he added.

Razeef urged authorities to act swiftly, emphasising the need to protect Sabah's poorest from this escalating issue. – November 2, 2024
