SARAWAK Parti Keadilan Rakyat has started sending essential foodstuffs and items into rural settlements in the Baram parliamentary constituency in northern Sarawak as pre-flood preparations pick up pace.

State PKR chairman Roland Engan said a convoy recently delivered items from Miri to the Rumah Niga in Baram longhouse.

Similar deliveries will be carried out for other areas in the coming weeks.

He said Sarawak PKR sponsored the food items and Merbau Furniture Miri and Persatuan Pewaris Miri sponsored household items like mattresses.

The district offices and welfare department throughout Sarawak have been directed to immediately stock up on food supplies and flood relief items in all forward bases in flood-prone areas throughout Sarawak.

Minister in the Sarawak Premier Department Datuk John Sikie said these forward bases must be prepared early.

"Every place that is known to be a flood danger zone where road links and river transport can be cut off when it rains must have a forward base where food supplies and flood relief items like temporary shelter are stocked.

"These forward bases must be readied soonest.

"The latest information is that 31 forward bases are already ready for operations.

"Those populated areas still without forward bases must be considered too if they are in danger of floods," he said. - November 4, 2024
