SARAWAK Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has defended the move by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to spend billions on hydrogen-related projects.
The GPS chairman said his administration is "looking five to 10 years into the future when hydrogen fuel will become the world’s top fuel".
"We are preparing early by investing heavily in hydrogen projects in Sarawak. We foresee that in five to 10 years, hydrogen will become a global fuel.
"We in Sarawak are also researching to bring down the high costs of producing hydrogen fuel.
"All these are for our future," he said during a Sarawak Forestry function in Kuching last night.
The state government is allocating huge sums to purchase hydrogen-powered trams from China, constructing tram routes in Kuching, as well as setting up hydrogen production facilities and laying huge pipelines to transport hydrogen fuel.
It was recently reported that the Sarawak government had confirmed the purchase of 38 units of hydrogen-powered trams from China even though China had halted the use of hydrogen-fuelled trams.
