THE Eurasian community in Penang lost a 'giant' recently when academician and local historian Datuk Dr Anthony Sibert, 85, died from old age.
His son Trevor confirmed the matter in a brief text message.
Sibert died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital early yesterday and his body was brought home to Penang for the wake today. A funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Pulau Tikus on Monday.
Among those mourning Sibert, was civil society advocate Khoo Salma Nasution and Think City Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Anwar Fazal, who worked with him on historical matters.
Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid, who also lost her father earlier this year, said that Sibert was a colleague of her mother at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
She extended her condolences to the family.
Besides his role in the education sector in Penang, Sibert was a tireless advocate for the history of the community, which has roots from ancestors in Malacca, Phuket and Bangkok in Thailand. - The Vibes, November 30, 2024.
