AMENDMENTS to the Communications and Multimedia Act were tabled for its first reading today by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He also presented amendments to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act for its first reading.

The amendment Bill, among others, will focus on addressing aspects of online gambling and scams, cyberbullying and sexual crimes against children.

Fahmi had previously said amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act would pave the way for social media companies to be more proactive and accountable for online harm occurring on their platforms.

This will be the first proposal for amendment since the Act was enacted 26 years ago.

The amendments will focus on three key areas, namely industry development, network security and social media and licensing.

This Bill, when approved will also empower the minister to make regulations on it, to provide for stricter penalties as deterrents and other related matters.

Amendments to the MCMC Act will empower the commission to set standards related to industry development and safety. - December 2, 2024
