THE Sarawak Forestry Corporation has confirmed the presence of Sei Whales - originally from European waters - in the ocean off the coast of Sarawak.

This follows the discovery of a huge whale carcass off southern Sarawak last month near Seduku Island which was later washed into the Sebuyau River.

The SFC said in a statement that forensic teams had carried out checks on the carcass and found it is that of a Sei Whale often found off Norway.

"This is the first time such a whale is found in Sarawak waters and we believe there are more of such whales in our territorial seas," said SFC.

The Sei Whale is one of the whales under the Baleen species grouping.

On Nov 23, a huge carcass of a 10-metre-long whale, found stuck below the Triso Bridge in the Sebuyau district in southern Sarawak was retrieved for analysis and its bones salvaged for museum preservation.

SFC and the Sarawak Museum Department were trying to salvage the bones of this huge whale found by Sebuyau fishermen. - December 15, 2025
