SARAWAK'S AirBorneo will ensure stable airfares and affordable air travel, especially during peak seasons, said Datuk Seri Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said AirBorneo was not just another airlines but played a crucial role in driving tourism and for economic growth.
"Ticket prices have soared to RM1,000 and more during festive seasons to Kuala Lumpur and with AirBorneo we want to create a balance and ensure prices are affordable for Sarawakians and visitors," he said.
He also said the airline will give Sarawak full control over its route planning and destinations, which is a major shift from having to previously rely on external carriers.
"We now have the prerogative to determine our destinations.
"While we will initially adopt the routes used by MasWings, we will gradually introduce new destinations based on demand," he said.
"While other airlines have also supported Sarawak's tourism, AirBorneo will help create a more competitive and affordable travel market," he said.
He also pointed out that AirBorneo's hub in Kuching would being about other economic benefits through spin-off industries such as aircraft maintenance and cargo handling.
"The state is already looking at a dedicated international airport to support the airline's long-term expansion.
"This will require skilled personnel, including engineers and other aviation specialists, creating more job opportunities for Sarawakians," he added. - February 14, 2025
