PARTI Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) wants to contest under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ticket in the northern Sarawak constituencies in the coming state election due in middle of next year.
PRS, the largest Iban party in Sarawak, said that at present, it does not have any elected representatives in the northern Sarawak divisions of Bintulu, Miri, Baram and Limbang.
"We the PRS have asked the GPS leadership to look into our request to be allotted seats for northern Sarawak.
"The Election Commission is currently carrying out electoral boundary redelineations in Sarawak.
"The new seats to be created for northern Sarawak should be shared with PRS to as we have many members in northern Sarawak, especially in Miri, Baram and Limbang.
"PRS have worked hard to ensure GPS victories in northern Sarawak in numerous elections and it is time we are given chance to contest in northern Sarawak constituencies," the party said in a press statement via its Limbang branch chief David Upe.
PRS has about 400,000 members in Sarawak and is the second biggest component party in the state ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu is the biggest component party with about 1.2 million members.
The other GPS component parties are Sarawak United People’s Party and Progressive Democratic Party.
PRS now has 12 elected representatives in the state assembly and in the Dewan Rakyat. – February 19, 2025
