A 43-year-old man has been remanded for seven days in connection with the suspected murder of his mother, whom he allegedly killed before setting her on fire at their residence in Jalan Tok Keling, Kota Setar, yesterday.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah today, following the suspect's arrest, Bernama reported today.

The man, who holds an OKU (Person with Disabilities) card, is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

According to reports, police discovered the body of the 68-year-old woman in a charred state after receiving a tip-off about the incident yesterday morning.

Kota Setar police chief ACP Siti Nor Salawati Saad (pic) confirmed that the suspect was apprehended near the scene of the crime.

The woman's 14-year-old grandson was also present at the house during the incident.

The boy reported that the altercation between his father and grandmother occurred between 7 and 7:30 AM.

He then heard his grandmother screaming for help. Panicking, the boy fled the house to seek assistance from neighbours.

However, when some neighbors attempted to investigate, the suspect allegedly threatened them, prompting the neighbors to call the police for help, ACP Siti Nor Salawati said in a statement.

The investigation into the case is ongoing. – March 3, 2025
