THERE is no requirement that the next Yang di - Pertua Negri (TYT) must be Penang-born or has served in the state previously, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Under the state's constitution, there is no such specification and neither, is it mandatory for the choice of governor to be the sole prerogative of the chief minister, said Chow.
He was responding to queries about who is the rightful candidate for the next TYT considering the current TYT Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak was appointed on May 1, 2021 for a five year term.
There has been speculation that he may be replaced at the end of his term by former Perak Mentri Besar Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib, despite having only served one term.
"This matter is at the sole discretion of the Yang di - Pertuan Agong although the state has submitted a list of prospecting candidates," Chow told a press conference.
Ramli, 84, was among the longest serving Mentris Besar of neighbouring Perak.
He was also the Dewan Rakyat Speaker before retiring from politics in 2008.
Chow urged all sides to be patient, as the state would soon disclose who might be the candidate or if Ahmad Fuzi is extended for another term. - March 20, 2025.
