ELECTRICITY and treated water supplies in flood-hit central Sarawak have been cut off in an emergency shutdown due to safety concerns, disrupting vital supplies to tens of thousands of people.

The Sarawak Electricity Supply Board said power to the districts of Kanowit, Kapit and Song had to be cut off for now as the floods are threatening to cause short-circuit that may jeopardise the lives of residents.

"We have to cut off the electricity supply until further notice in the flooded regions for the safety of the people. The supplies will be restored as soon as the floods do not pose any more threat of short circuit and electrocution," said a board in public notices.

Separately, the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Board said water-treatment plants in these inundated districts have to be shut down for now.

"The water intake section of the treatment plants have been affected by floods. The water processing facilities cannot operate for now," said the board.

The board management said water tankers will be deployed to affected residents if the link roads are not flooded.

Sarawak is experiencing another session of torrential rain that had caused floods since the past two days. The worst-hit areas are in the central region where rescue teams from Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Units are busy helping and evacuating afflicted residents. – March 22, 2025
