Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has passed away.
In an Instagram story, his son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin said the former prime minister passed away at the National Heart Institute at 7.10pm on Monday (April 14).
His health had been failing in recent years as he suffered from dementia and could no longer remember the names of his wife and family members.
“May Allah bless his soul and place him among the righteous. Al-Fatihah,” he posted.
Born on Nov 26, 1939, in Bayan Lepas, Penang, Abdullah helmed the country’s premiership from Oct 31, 2003, until April 3, 2009, following the resignation of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Affectionately known as Pak Lah, he was the sixth president of Umno and was conferred the title "Tun" by then-King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin for his service to the nation.
Abdullah is survived by his wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, and two children—Kamaluddin and Nori.
His political career spanned over four decades, marked by his image as a moderate, reform-minded leader and a strong advocate for civilisational Islam and anti-corruption reforms.
Paklah will be laid to rest in the Warriors’ Mausoleum tomorrow afternoon.
Khairy said Abdullah’s remains will be brought to the National Mosque tomorrow morning.
“From 11am to 1pm, Tun Abdullah’s remains will be placed in the main hall of the National Mosque to allow members of the public to pay their final respects.
“After zohor prayers, funeral prayers will be held for Pak Lah. After that, he will be laid to rest in the Warriors’ Mausoleum of the National Mosque,” he said.
Khairy also thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for confirming and consenting to Abdullah’s burial in the mausoleum. - April 14, 2025
