WORK to upgrade the water supply system in Penang is now underway and 19 out of the 23 maintenance and upgrading works have been completed, according to the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP).

Majority of the state is experienced major water cuts as of 10pm last night while some areas continue to have supply due to water tankers located in their landed and strata residential areas.
Majority of the eateries, commercial, industrial and retail shops continue to operate, as weekends are usually a buzz time for shopping and tourist activities.
Over 300,000 households would be experiencing the scheduled water disruption, which will last up to Monday for some, but majority of the affected locations should have supply resumed by later tonight and by tomorrow evening.
PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan said that 60% of waterworks have been completed on the four remaining projects.
Supply would be restored in stages, he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, some residents have made a beeline for neighbouring states to escape the water cuts, which is most pronounced in the Balik Pulau, NIbong Tebal and Bukit Mertajam districts located the furthest from the main water supply station at Sungai Dua in Butterworth.
A check with hotels revealed that it is business as usual, as many hoteliers have ensured that there is adequate supply in their reserves but some have lamented that they may not have adequate if the disruption runs into 72 - hours. - April 26, 2025.
