PENANG is looking to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help navigate the worsening road congestion by offering smarter solutions to the local authorities.
This initiative is part of the state's aspirations to become an AI - driven city in recognition of its growing standing as an important entity in the global supply of electronics and electrical products.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said embracing AI-powered technologies will help the city accelerate its infrastructure and services.
It will modernise efforts, increase productivity and efficiency, and ultimately enhance citizens' quality of life through smarter solutions, he said in a statement.
He said the AI initiatives are now part and parcel of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP)'s operations.
He this after visiting the city council headquarters here as part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to drive AI and 5G adoption.
Lord Mayor and council president Datuk Anthony Rajendran shared that the council is implementing an advanced traffic management solution to optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion using AI-powered analytics.
The data derived from AI fast learning algorithms would help the council relay real time messaging to road users on how best to avoid congestions and open new alternatives if major roads are clogged.
The journey towards digital transformation also includes creating a comprehensive digital twin, data analysis, and visualisation of the city.
This virtual replica will enable accurate simulation of urban dynamics for better planning and emergency response management.
The city council’s command centre will have access to a vast knowledge base, allowing it to
gather analytical information from multiple systems, enhancing city management.
"Penang's progress towards becoming an AI-driven city is a testament to the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for the betterment of our citizens.
“These initiatives are not just about innovation; they are about creating a smarter, safer, and more sustainable urban environment," added Gobind.
Digital Nasional's Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azman Ismail said that AI and 5G adoption are crucial for Malaysia's digital transformation.
