A SCHOOL van caught fire near Sekolah Kebangsaan Datuk Muip in the Taman Tunku housing estate, just outside Miri city, during the morning rush hour on Tuesday — but all occupants escaped unharmed.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency alert regarding the incident at around 8am. Firefighters from the Miri station were dispatched immediately to the scene, located approximately 15 kilometres from the city centre.

“Rescue teams rushed to the scene and saw the school van already on fire. About 70 percent of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Fire teams doused the flames. No one was injured,” the department confirmed in a press statement.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The school, SK Datuk Muip, is a primary school situated in Taman Tunku — one of the largest residential and commercial zones in the Miri district. The incident sparked concern among parents and residents, but swift action from the fire department prevented further danger. - May 13, 2025
