GEORGE TOWN – A former trainee doctor (houseman) has allegedly committed suicide after resigning from his position at Penang General Hospital three weeks ago.

The doctor, in his 20s, who trained at the Manipal Medical Institute, was found dead at his home in Bukit Jambul yesterday.

He graduated in 2018.

George Town OCPD Soffian Santong confirmed the case when contacted

It is learnt that he resigned from the hospital three weeks before his death, and an internal investigation might be carried out at the hospital.

Soffian said he is gathering more information on the matter now.

“Bullying of housemen has been a long-standing practice, fuelled by the working environment,” said one doctor, who requested anonymity.

The doctor is also aware of the case.

Another doctor, who also spoke on anonymity, said it has been difficult to put a stop to the rampant practice, considered a form of ragging.
