MALAYSIA and Brunei have expressed confidence that ASEAN can continue to serve as a model region for diplomacy and global peace, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said following a phone conversation with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei on Tuesday.
"We touched on ASEAN, as well as efforts to reconcile Thailand and Cambodia, which yesterday agreed unconditionally to cease all forms of violence," said Anwar in a Facebook post on Tuesday evening, shortly after arriving at the ASEAN Secretariat Building in Jakarta.
"God willing, we are confident ASEAN will continue to be a model region in upholding diplomacy and global peace,” he added.
The ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia was reached following a special meeting chaired by Anwar in his capacity as ASEAN Chair in Putrajaya on Monday. The talks were attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Also present were United States Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The US co-hosted the meeting, while China participated as an observer in support of peaceful conflict resolution.
The two Southeast Asian neighbours share a disputed 817-kilometre border, long marked by diplomatic friction. Tensions have escalated since 28 May following clashes near Preah Vihear, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Renewed conflict on 24 July saw further skirmishes in northern Cambodia, with casualties reported on both sides.
Anwar later disclosed that upon his return from Jakarta, he also held a conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
"We discussed current regional developments, including his recent visit to the United States and ASEAN’s crucial role in strengthening regional cooperation,” Anwar noted.
They also reviewed progress in the Cambodia-Thailand peace effort, acknowledging remaining challenges while noting positive momentum. Anwar affirmed Malaysia’s appreciation for the constructive engagement of major powers such as the US and China, alongside ASEAN partners.
"ASEAN must remain united, principled, and grounded in dialogue as we navigate regional and global challenges," he said.
Following the special meeting, Anwar travelled to Jakarta for the 13th Annual Consultation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, held on Tuesday. - July 30, 2025
