GEORGE TOWN – In spite of the Covid-19 pandemic and a series of movement control orders (MCOs), the Malaysian community continues to practise the spirit of giving and sharing that comes with the Christmas season.
To get parishioners involved in its Christmas project, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit here, in collaboration with St Joseph’s Home, distributed 150 gift sets to children in Penang Hospital’s paediatric ward on December 17.
Among the items are T-shirts with artwork designed by online journalist Susan Loone, a parishioner of the church since 1980.
Dubbed the My Little Angel project, Loone said the artwork is her way of contributing to several children’s homes in Penang to promote the spirit of giving, sharing, unity and togetherness during this festive season.
Thanks to her various sponsors, who not only showed appreciation for Loone’s artwork, but also helped with the project, she said, “their contribution brought cheer to kids in the homes”.
“These homes used to have parties for Christmas, but due to the MCO, such events have been cancelled. So, the gifts of mugs and T-shirts are meant to send a message that Christmas is a time of happiness and blessings, no matter what the situation.”
Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid handed over the T-shirts to the cathedral’s Father Joachim Roberts and Father Francis Anthony on December 12.
Batu Lanchang rep Ong Ah Teong and Penang Speaker Law Choo Kiang, too, contributed to the T-shirts.
Loone’s “little angels” were also spotted at Pusat Sinaran Ceria, a welfare home in Bukit Mertajam. The constituency’s MP, Steven Sim, contributed 50 mugs and RM5,000 to the home, which is run independently by a local family.
Meanwhile, Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao Leung presented 45 T-shirts and 10 mugs to the Pertubuhan Penyayang Chi Yun orphanage.
