THE High Court has issued a prohibitory injunction to stop Telegram from disseminating harmful content said to undermine public institutions and threaten social order.
Judge Mahazan Mat Taib made the prohibitory order in closed proceedings today. The order will remain in force until the disposal of MCMC’s lawsuit.
The court also granted the government's application, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to remove 33 impugned articles from two Telegram accounts - Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas.
However, she dismissed MCMC’s application for an order to block or shut down future Telegram accounts that might disseminate similar harmful content, saying the court could not compel Telegram to practise self-censorship.
Lawyer Datuk S. N. Nair who appeared for the MCMC said the court also fixed Sept 24 for next case management.
On June 19, MCMC has obtained an interim (temporary) injunction from the High Court to prevent the republication of content from two Telegram channels, Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas.
MCMC said that the platform was named as one of the defendants in the suit, deemed as the first of its kind, following its serious failure to address the harmful content.
The commission also said it remains committed to ensuring that the country's digital space remains safe, ethical, and in compliance with the law. – September 11, 2025
