A MOTHER and her daughter were found dead inside a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in Jalan Solok Hilir Paya Rumput, Cheng, early Thursday morning.
The victims, Zabanah Abu Hussin, 57, a single mother, and her daughter Intan Nur Shafiqah Othman, 25, are believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after stopping to rest in their Proton Exora with the engine left running.
Melaka Police Chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the police received an emergency call at 12.24am from a member of the public who discovered the two women unconscious inside the vehicle.
“Initial investigations suggest both victims likely died from gas poisoning after resting in the vehicle without switching off the engine,” he said.
“When officers arrived at the scene, they found the car engine and air-conditioning still running, with all windows fully closed.
“Both women were fully clothed and lying motionless in the front seats. Medical officers from Melaka Hospital confirmed they had died at the scene.”
Speaking to reporters at the *Ex Kesidang 2025* event organised by the Melaka State National Security Council in Ayer Keroh on Thursday, Dzulkhairi said the bodies had been sent to the Forensic Department of Melaka Hospital, with post-mortems scheduled for 8.30am.
“Investigations are ongoing. Blood samples have been sent to the Department of Chemistry for analysis of drugs, alcohol and carbon monoxide levels,” he added.
He confirmed the case is currently classified as a sudden death pending the outcome of a full investigation.
The police have urged the public not to speculate on the widely-circulated case while inquiries continue. - September 18, 2025
