A 40-YEAR-OLD offshore operations supervisor has lost more than RM154,000 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme, believing he was investing in a bulk stationery supply business.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the victim lodged a report at the Kuala Terengganu police station at 4.37pm yesterday after realising he had been duped.

“The victim was attracted to an investment opportunity involving the bulk supply of stationery advertised through a social media application on 17 September,” said Azli.

He added that the man was subsequently directed, via a link provided by an unknown individual, to join the scheme through the application.

“In total, the victim made 10 transactions between 19 September and 3 October, transferring funds into five different accounts belonging to individuals and companies,” he said.

When promised profits failed to materialise, the victim attempted to withdraw from the investment. However, the syndicate allegedly demanded RM63,191 in penalties and a further RM81,000 in ‘store management fees’ via the app in order to exit the scheme.

Azli added, “The victim realised he had been conned when he was unable to recover his original investment capital. He did not proceed with the additional payments and chose instead to file a police report.”

The case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. -October10, 2025
