PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties to refrain from stirring political controversy or protest over the upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump to Malaysia in conjunction with the ASEAN summit, stressing that the focus must remain on securing a peace agreement between Hamas and Israel.
“We are appealing to all countries, including the United States. Malaysia has made a direct appeal to President Donald Trump to ensure that this agreement is both signed and implemented,” Anwar said after attending Friday prayers at Surau Fathurrahman PPAM Melinjau.
“I hope that spirit is upheld. We are, of course, praying for peace, but we want results. This is also based on information we received from Hamas,” he added.
According to Anwar, Hamas itself has shown willingness to pursue peace. He questioned the point of continued hostility when civilians – including women and children – continue to be killed and territories occupied.
“If even Hamas is ready for peace, then why are others still calling for conflict? Let us stop the killings first,” he said.
Anwar also expressed disappointment over criticism directed at Malaysians who participated in the recent Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission to Gaza.
“I feel a little hurt by those who politicise our efforts. Not everyone is willing to risk their lives to help the people of Gaza. For those who do, we must express our gratitude and offer our prayers,” he said.
He confirmed that the Malaysian government is working on repatriating nine citizens who were detained by Israeli forces during their involvement in the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) humanitarian mission to Gaza.
Anwar further revealed he is scheduled to be contacted by a representative of the Turkish government at 3.30pm today for updates on the situation, with a formal announcement expected during the tabling of the national budget later in the evening. - October 10, 2025
