A TOTAL of 158 flood victims from 45 families have been relocated to two temporary evacuation centres in Kulim following over two hours of torrential rain on Thursday evening.
According to Captain (PA) Amirul Alif Ahmad, secretary of the Kulim District Disaster Management Committee, residents from several villages in the Lunas and Sungai Ular subdistricts were forced to evacuate.
The affected areas include Kampung Sungai Limau, Kampung Batu 5, Kampung Batu 6, and Kampung Paya Betok.
“The Surau Al Shahidin in Taman Sang Kancil was opened at 8.30pm and now houses 143 individuals from 41 families. These include 54 adult men, 62 adult women, 27 children, 14 senior citizens and three persons with disabilities,” he said.
The second centre, at Dewan Kampung Paya Tok Betok, opened at 11pm and accommodates 15 victims from four families, comprising four adult men, four adult women, six children, a baby, and three elderly individuals.
Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) in Kedah reported that water levels at Sungai Janing in Kampung Labi (Padang Terap) have surpassed the alert threshold, while Sungai Ketil in Kampung Bongor (Baling) has reached the warning level.
In a related development, three federal Islamic agencies have channelled RM184,700 in relief funds to victims of a severe storm that struck parts of Kuala Langat, Selangor on Wednesday.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, said the funds were disbursed in a coordinated effort between the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), the Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM), and the Federal Territories Islamic Council’s Taqwa Foundation (MAIWP).
“This reflects the core value of compassion under the Madani government. A total of 65 heads of households received assistance, as well as 13 injured students who were caught in the storm while at school,” he said during a visit to the affected Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) Kampung Medan in Sijangkang.
JAKIM contributed RM86,400, including RM500 in cash to each of the 65 families, RM300 to each of the 13 injured pupils, and RM50,000 for the repair of the damaged surau.
Yayasan Taqwa allocated RM65,000, or RM1,000 per family, while YaPEIM donated RM33,300 in the form of RM100 food baskets for all 65 households, RM500 cash aid per injured student, and RM20,000 for surau repairs.
“I hope the aid provided to the school and affected residents will help ease their burden,” said Dr Mohd Na’im. He added that speedy restoration of damaged school facilities is vital, especially with the Ujian Penilaian Kelas KAFA (UPKK) examinations approaching.
Exco for Islamic Affairs in Selangor, Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah, confirmed that 1,500 students from SRA Kampung Medan will shift to home-based learning (PdPR) while repair works are underway.
He noted that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has granted the school a two-week closure.
“However, 200 Year Five students are sitting the UPKK exams next week, so we will ensure appropriate classrooms are made available for them,” he said.
Dr Fahmi revealed that a block of classrooms suffered roof and wiring damage, while two other blocks sustained minor ceiling issues. The Public Works Department (JKR) is conducting further safety inspections.
An additional RM18,000 was donated through the Selangor Muslim Community’s Infak Jariah Fund (TIJARI) to the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, affected students, and rebuilding efforts.
Halal International Selangor also contributed RM1,300 in direct assistance to the 13 injured pupils. - October 18, 2025
