THE RM1.2 billion expansion of Penang International Airport (PIA) continues to make steady headway, with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) reporting notable progress on three core construction packages now underway.
As of this month, Package 2 (WP02), which involves the construction of new aircraft apron areas and advanced airside systems, has reached 24 per cent completion.
“This includes pavement works for new aprons, installation of airfield drainage systems, and laying of cable ducts for advanced lighting and aircraft management systems,” MAHB said in a statement on Wednesday.
Demolition and relocation of existing taxiways are also in progress as part of efforts to enhance the airport’s overall airside operations.
Meanwhile, Package 1 (WP01), covering the development of support buildings, office spaces, remote stations, mechanical and electrical systems, and civil works, is now 71 per cent complete.
Package 3 (WP03), which will deliver the new domestic and international terminals, landscaping, roadworks, and the relocation of high- and low-voltage infrastructure, is also underway.
MAHB confirmed that the entire airport upgrade remains on track to be delivered within the four-year construction timeline from 2024 to 2028.
“The project is being carefully managed to minimise operational disruption while accelerating delivery,” the statement noted, adding that the Penang state government is maintaining close oversight.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, following a recent project briefing, expressed confidence in the upgrade’s trajectory.
“Upgrading PIA is not just about increasing capacity. It is part of our strategy to position Penang as a premier tourism and business destination,” he said.
“The state is pleased with the progress, particularly on WP02, which is crucial for future airside operations and connectivity. The airport must reflect Penang’s spirit—innovative, welcoming, and rooted in culture. This project will strengthen our role as a coastal business and tourism hub,” Chow added.
Currently operating 24 hours a day, PIA serves seven domestic and eight international routes, handling an average of 22,584 passengers daily with 49 check-in counters, 12 aircraft bays, and nine aerobridges.
Upon completion, the upgraded airport will be capable of accommodating up to 12 million passengers annually—nearly double its current capacity of 6.5 million.
The facility will also see a significant increase in aircraft parking bays, from 16 to 28, and will feature a larger, modern terminal aligned with the Airport 4.0 standard, emphasising automation and smart systems.
In addition to infrastructure, the project places strong emphasis on passenger experience, incorporating a ‘Sense of Malaysia’ design concept to showcase Penang’s cultural richness and heritage. - October 22, 2025
