THE number of flood victims seeking refuge across Kedah, Perak and Penang has surged to 3,441 people from 1,175 families, with 37 temporary relief centres (PPS) now in operation as of noon today.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) Disaster Info Portal, Perak remains the worst-hit state, recording 2,202 evacuees from 757 families — a slight increase from 2,200 earlier today. Twenty-two PPS have been activated in the districts of Larut, Matang and Selama, and Manjung.
Kedah also reported a sharp rise in flood victims, with numbers climbing from 155 to 945 individuals across 293 families.
Eight PPS are currently operating in the Kulim and Kuala Muda districts, including schools and community halls such as SJKC Choong Cheng, SMA Insaniah Jangkang, and Dewan Orang Ramai Sungai Karangan.
In Penang, the situation has worsened since this morning, with seven PPS now open compared to just one earlier. Floods have affected residents in Seberang Perai Utara (Permatang Berangan), Barat Daya (Balik Pulau) and Seberang Perai Tengah (Penanti), displacing 294 people from 125 families.
In Ipoh, residents in flood-prone areas have been urged not to wait until the last moment before evacuating.
“The safety of your lives and families must be the top priority. If instructed to evacuate, please proceed immediately to the nearest PPS,” said Perak’s Committee Chair for Women’s Development, Family, Community Welfare, Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, in a Facebook post today.
She added that the Social Welfare Department and emergency services were fully prepared to handle the situation, with safe shelters, food, essential supplies and psychosocial support ready for displaced families.
“The Perak government assures that every affected citizen’s needs will be well taken care of. For NGOs or individuals wishing to contribute, please contact the respective District Flood Operations Control Centres (PKOB) for coordination,” she said.
Salbiah also expressed her gratitude to all frontliners and volunteers assisting flood victims across the state.
It was earlier reported that at 8am on Friday, 2,171 residents from 759 families had been relocated to 22 PPS in Larut, Matang and Selama, and Manjung after continuous heavy rain inundated several low-lying areas. - October 24, 2025
