PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is holding bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today, marking a renewed phase in Malaysia–Brazil relations ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit.
The discussions, taking place this morning, coincide with Lula’s first official visit to Malaysia since the establishment of diplomatic ties between both nations in 1959.
Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, the Prime Minister’s senior press secretary, said in a televised briefing that the meeting underscored both nations’ shared aspirations in promoting economic justice and global prosperity.
“The relationship was further reinforced after the Prime Minister attended the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro last July,” Tunku Nashrul said.
“Malaysia continues to bring a firm voice for the countries of the Global South, advocating for a fairer, more balanced, and sustainable international trade and financial system,” he added.
The talks are expected to strengthen the two countries’ commitment to exploring cooperation in emerging fields and to facilitate an exchange of views on regional and global developments.
“The visit reflects the confidence and closeness of the Malaysia–Brazil relationship, based on mutual respect and a shared effort to strengthen South–South cooperation for the collective benefit of both countries and the region,” Tunku Nashrul said.
Brazil was Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in Latin America in 2024, with total bilateral trade amounting to RM20.36 billion (USD4.46 billion).
Malaysia’s major exports included electrical and electronic products, palm oil, rubber and halal pharmaceuticals, while its imports comprised ores, processed food and petroleum products. - October 25, 2025
