THREE ferries undergoing maintenance at a ship repair yard in Bukit Malut were destroyed in a fire that broke out at about 2.15am on Tuesday.
Langkawi Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department chief, Fire Superintendent Mohd Zamri Abd Ghani, said the department received a distress call at 2.29am.
“Four fire engines from the Persiaran Putra, Langkawi, and Padang Matsirat Fire and Rescue Stations, along with 21 personnel, were deployed to the scene,” he said in a statement today.
“Upon arrival about five minutes later, firefighters found three ferries moored close to each other engulfed in flames,” he added.
The fire was brought fully under control by 3.37am, while another nearby ferry was towed away to prevent it from catching fire.
Mohd Zamri said ‘overhaul’ operations were still ongoing to ensure there were no hidden embers, and investigations were underway to determine the cause of the blaze and the estimated losses.
