PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised that the conflict in Gaza was repeatedly raised in his engagements with United States President Donald Trump, including during their discussions inside “The Beast”, the American presidential vehicle, on Sunday.

Characterising Trump as an attentive listener, Anwar said he maximised the opportunity to exchange views during their journey to Kuala Lumpur, maintaining respectful and constructive dialogue even when their perspectives diverged.

Anwar said he conveyed Malaysia’s firm stance and represented the voice of the people in advocating for the Palestinian cause.

“I shared my views (with Trump), but in diplomacy, not everything needs to be shouted in public. What matters is that you have entrusted me to be your spokesman, and I spoke to defend the interests of the Palestinian people and Gaza.

“Then, during the Malaysia-US bilateral meeting, we expressed our appreciation and called for a comprehensive approach to the 20 point Gaza peace plan,” he said at a press conference at the conclusion of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits as reported by Bernama.

He said the matter was also reiterated during the 13th ASEAN United States Summit in the presence of all ASEAN leaders.

Anwar stressed that he was dissatisfied with certain quarters who sought cheap publicity or engaged in “cheap political stunts” in connection with Trump’s attendance at the summit.

He also rejected claims that the government had capitulated, emphasising Malaysia’s firm and principled leadership on international issues.

“We’re too caught up in our own politics, indulging in cheap political stunts; I’m completely dissatisfied with that. Who says we’ve surrendered? Who else dares to speak directly to President Donald Trump? At every available opportunity, we thank Trump for the initial steps, but we want a complete solution,” he said.

“… I said, you don’t have to support me, but when we make such a statement, at least lend your support to Malaysia’s position. Malaysia is fortunate, Alhamdulillah, to be the ASEAN Chair,” he said.

Anwar said his four-eyed meeting with Trump allowed Malaysia to convey its position on the Gaza issue directly to the US President. – October 28, 2025
