MALAYSIA and Italy have agreed to expedite and conclude a strategic energy partnership between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Italian energy company Eni S.p.A (ENI) in the near future, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday evening.
In a post on platform X, Anwar, who also serves as Minister of Finance, said the agreement was reached during a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
He added that Malaysia is prepared to welcome Meloni on an official visit to Kuala Lumpur early next year to finalise the strategic agreement.
“In our conversation, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni informed me of her absence from the 47th ASEAN Summit due to pressing domestic matters in Rome involving the drafting and passage of legislation related to the national budget, as well as discussions at the European Union level,” Anwar said.
Anwar added that Malaysia understands Italy’s domestic priorities and expressed appreciation for the country’s continued stance in supporting global calls for peace, justice, and humanity in Gaza – efforts he described as vital in today’s world.
“Insya-Allah, the close ties between Malaysia and Italy will continue to be strengthened for the benefit of the peoples of both nations,” Anwar said. - October 30, 2025
