MALAYSIA has urged an immediate cessation of all violence in Sudan following escalating humanitarian crises in El Fasher and across the Darfur region, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describing the situation as a deeply alarming catastrophe.
“I am deeply alarmed by the unfolding tragedy in El Fasher and across Darfur, Sudan. What we are witnessing is a humanitarian catastrophe; mass killings, starvation, and displacement on a scale that shocks the conscience,” Anwar said in a social media statement on Monday.
He emphasised that reports of atrocities potentially amounting to crimes against humanity or even genocide are wholly unacceptable.
“Malaysia urges that violence be halted immediately and that the safety of civilians be fully protected in accordance with international humanitarian law,” he said.
Anwar also called on the international community to act decisively to prevent further suffering, restore humanitarian access, and support a credible process towards peace and accountability.
“We stand firmly with the people of Sudan and urge the international community to take strong measures to prevent continued suffering, restore humanitarian access, and support a credible process towards peace and accountability,” he added.
The situation in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is described as one of Sudan’s most severe humanitarian crises since the outbreak of civil conflict in 2023. Thousands have fled the city following its capture by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on October 26, after months of intense fighting with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Reports from Al Jazeera and Human Rights Watch indicate widespread atrocities, including killings of civilians, targeted attacks on women and children, destruction of hospitals and schools, and systematic abuses against ethnic groups such as the Zaghawa, who are perceived to support the government.
On November 1, Doctors Without Borders warned of an ongoing, potentially fatal crisis affecting large numbers of people in El Fasher. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a halt to the supply of weapons to all parties involved and described the situation as a “terrible escalation in the conflict,” urging the international community to take a firm stand. - November 3, 2025
