PARTI Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu has hinted that the 16th General Election (GE16) may be held simultaneously with several state elections (PRN) next year, basing his prediction on what he described as the Prime Minister’s “tell-tale smile”.
“It is not impossible that GE16 and the state elections will be held at the same time next year — that’s just my reading.
“This is the Prime Minister’s prerogative, but when I look at his face, if he smiles and the right side of his mouth curves slightly, the election is near.
“If the curve is on the left side, then it’s still a long way off. That’s just my observation — I don’t know if it’s true,” he said during his Presidential Address at the 2025 Amanah National Convention held at Dewan Raja Muda Musa, Selangor Youth and Culture Complex, on Saturday.
Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary-general Anthony Loke has also reiterated his party’s support for holding the general and state elections concurrently. His stance, as Member of Parliament for Seremban, has since gained backing from leaders across both government and opposition parties.
According to Mohamad Sabu, the state elections expected to take place next year include those in Melaka, Johor and Sarawak. He said the period would be a suitable time for polls, given the Unity Government’s current strong performance.
Mohamad, who also serves as Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, urged Amanah members to remain prepared for any eventuality.
“I call on all our machinery to return to the field and engage with the people. Reach out to the community, help those in need, and be a voice that calms — not one that frightens.
“Remember, it is not impossible that GE16 and several state elections will be held simultaneously next year. So, let us start working now,” he said. - November 8, 2025
