Perlis: Political crisis brewing as MB hospitalised?

PERLIS PKR chairman Noor Amin Ahmad has slammed Perikatan Nasional (PN) for not getting its house in order following reports that nine of its elected representatives have indicated a withdrawal of support for the embattled Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

Noor Amin said that the matter is strictly an administrative matter over Shukri's leadership style and strategies, yet it has now evolved into becoming a constitutional one after it is learnt that the assemblypersons have referred the matter to the state Istana for advice.

"We should find ways to resolve our internal issues without affecting third parties, now the palace and His Royal Highness the Raja of Perlis' subjects. It also shows that PN is all about power brokering among themselves instead of serving their electorate."

Noor Amin urged PN to resolve the issue fast because the political impasse will only affect the economic climate of the country's smallest state.

Since the last state election, PAS has nine seats while its ally in PN, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has five while PKR through Pakatan Harapan (PH), only has one.

Shukri is the first ever PAS leader to be a mentri besar of the country's smallest state, who had one time boost of four Umno stalwarts in former mentri besars - the late Tan Sri Dr Abdul Hamid Pawanteh, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim; former party secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad and former Home Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid.

To complicate matters, Shukri is now hospitalised in Kuala Lumpur for a heart ailment upon a return from a state visit to China.

The Perlis PAS commissioner, a former educator, is said to be an in-law of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Shukri's daughter is said to have married one of Hadi's son.

It is understood that several PN assemblymen have withdrawn their support for Mohd Shukri, sparking speculation over a possible change of menteri besar in the future, or the scenario of a fresh state election if the assembly is dissolved.

Majority of the assemblymen have expressed their stance on the matter, leaving two likely options, either Shukri resigns, or the state legislative assembly is dissolved.

"The possibility of a change in menteri besar exists and depends on whether Shukri chooses to resign or not as support for him dwindles," said Noor Amin.

Noor Amin said that PN should abide by the consequences of the "Sheraton Move," where politicians lose confidence in their leaders, saying that the outcome was instability.

The keyword for Malaysian politics nowadays is stability, and who ever can comb it together, would likely be given the constitutional mandate to govern, said Noor Amin.
