THE Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has submitted two names for consideration for the position of Menteri Besar of Perlis, following the voluntary resignation of Mohd Shukri Ramli due to health reasons.
PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang confirmed that the two nominees have been formally presented to the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, for his consideration.
“PAS still controls the Perlis State Legislative Assembly despite three of its representatives being expelled from the party.
“We still hold six seats while BERSATU has five, so we are entitled to nominate the Menteri Besar,” he said in remarks at his residence today.
Mohd Shukri, who is also the assemblyman for Sanglang, announced his resignation as Menteri Besar of Perlis yesterday, citing health concerns as the primary reason.
Earlier this week, PAS terminated the membership of three Perlis assemblymen after they signed statutory declarations that were alleged to undermine the leadership of the state government. The three expelled assemblymen are Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji).
Addressing questions about the circumstances surrounding Mohd Shukri’s resignation, Abdul Hadi emphasised that the decision was based solely on health considerations, not the actions of eight assemblymen—including five from BERSATU—who signed statutory declarations attempting to instigate a leadership change.
Abdul Hadi, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Marang, noted that PAS is fully prepared for any forthcoming by-elections in Perlis.
“We are ready, including for elections in the three constituencies where party representatives have been expelled or in the event of a by-election,” he said.
When asked about potential appeals by the former PAS assemblymen who were expelled, Abdul Hadi stated that while they may submit appeals, it remains at the party’s discretion whether to accept them.
“They may lodge an appeal, but it is up to us to decide whether to accept it or not,” he added, reaffirming the party’s stance that the three former assemblymen committed serious violations and breached the party’s oath. - December 26, 2025
