A MODERATE earthquake registering 5.6 on the Richter scale struck southern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 8.22 a.m. local time today, according to Malaysian authorities.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported that the tremor occurred at coordinates 5.6° South and 102.2° East, with a depth of 70 kilometres. The epicentre was located approximately 199 kilometres south of Bengkulu, Indonesia.
Despite the seismic activity, MetMalaysia emphasised that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and has advised the public to remain alert to any updates regarding seismic events in the region.
