THE swearing-in ceremony for Perlis’ new Chief Minister, who will succeed Mohd Shukri Ramli following his resignation last Thursday, is expected to take place at midday at Istana Arau.

The incoming Chief Minister will be formally sworn in before the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.

Among the names mentioned as potential candidates is PAS state executive council (Exco) member Muhammad Azmir Azizan (pic-left), who also serves as the Santan state assemblyman.

Another leading contender is Abu Bakar Hamzah, the Kuala Perlis assemblyman from Bersatu, noted for his exemplary performance as a state Exco member in previous terms.

Mohd Shukri’s resignation was officially attributed to health reasons. However, reports indicate that several state assembly members aligned with Perikatan Nasional (PN) had met Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail to express a loss of confidence in the former Chief Minister and formally withdraw their support.

In response to the political realignment, PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang announced on Wednesday that the memberships of Chuping assemblyman Saad Seman, Bintong assemblyman Fakhrul Anwar Ismail, and Guar Sanji assemblyman Mohd Ridzuan Hashim had been terminated immediately.

The new appointment marks a critical moment in Perlis politics, reflecting shifts in party allegiances and the reconfiguration of state leadership in the wake of resignations and withdrawals of support. -December 28, 2025
