A MAN who was remanded for five days to assist in investigations into the attempted murder of a doctor was confirmed to have a criminal record and tested positive for marijuana.
Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said that apart from the 31-year-old suspect, his 23-year-old wife was also tested positive for marijuana.
"Police received a report regarding the incident at 3.43am, December 29.
"Initial investigations found that the incident occurred a day earlier, at approximately 11.30pm, when the victim and his wife were driving towards Penang Sentral," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that upon arriving at the Butterworth Outer Ring Toll Plaza (BORR), Perai, the victim's vehicle driven by his wife experienced problems in the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) lane when the toll barrier failed to open.
"The victim then got out of the vehicle to ask the driver of a Proton X50 vehicle behind him to pull over to give them space.
"However, the suspect is believed to have yelled at the victim before speeding up his vehicle and crashing into the victim and the back of the vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene," he said.
Helmi added that as a result of the crash, the victim suffered cuts and scratches on his right big toe and pain in several parts of his body.
"The victim has been receiving treatment as an outpatient at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital.
"Acting on information, a police team from the Criminal Investigation Division, Central Seberang Perai Police Headquarters arrested the couple on Monday to assist in the investigation," he said.
According to him, the police also seized a Proton X50 vehicle believed to be used by the suspect during the incident.
"The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine.
"If the act causes injury, the sentence can increase to up to 20 years in prison, if convicted," he explained.
It was earlier reported that a trader had been remanded for five days to assist in the investigation into the incident of a doctor who was injured after being hit by a car in the RFID lane at the BORR Toll Plaza, Perai.
The suspect was brought to the Magistrate's Court with his wife this morning for an application for a remand order.
The couple appeared in court wearing purple lockup clothes and were accompanied by police officers.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate Savinder Singh, starting today until January 3. – December 30, 2025
