A 34-YEAR-OLD woman has been remanded for two days after allegedly causing a public disturbance and displaying aggressive behaviour, including obscene gestures and verbal abuse directed at police officers in the Mergong area of Alor Setar.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah of the Alor Setar Court, with the detention starting today, confirmed Kota Setar district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali.
“The case is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using violence to deter public servants from performing their duties.
Further investigations are also being conducted under Section 298 for uttering words intended to provoke religious outrage, and Section 509 for acts intended to insult the modesty of a person through words or gestures of an obscene nature,” he said.
The incident followed a report received by police at 1.11pm on Wednesday, in which a member of the public alerted authorities to a woman believed to be mentally unstable who had allegedly punched someone at a local company in Mergong.
Responding to the call, two police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they reportedly found the woman causing a commotion and disturbing public order.
Earlier media reports had highlighted that the woman had aggressively confronted the officers, including shouting abuses and making lewd gestures.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter, which involves multiple charges relating to public disorder and the obstruction of police duties. - January 1, 2026
