PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received the Order of the Republic, one of Turkey's highest honours.

The award was presented by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a symbol of appreciation for the close relationship between the two countries.

It also reflects Turkey's recognition of Malaysia's continued commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, including strategic relations that cover various sectors of mutual interest.

The Prime Minister, in his statement, expressed gratitude for the honour received, besides describing the award as an appreciation for the Malaysian people as a whole, not for his personal capacity.

“I accept it with great gratitude and humility, not in my personal capacity, but on behalf of all Malaysians,” he said.

According to Anwar, the award symbolizes the strong friendship between Malaysia and Turkey, which is based on trust, mutual respect and a shared vision towards global peace and prosperity.

Anwar also expressed his hope that the recognition would be a catalyst for the expansion of more comprehensive bilateral cooperation, especially in strategic areas that directly benefit the people of both countries.

The Order of the Republic is awarded to foreign leaders who have made significant contributions to strengthening relations with Turkey, including in the fields of diplomacy, security, trade and development. - January 8, 2026
