KOTA KINABALU – Sabah police have warned it will act against new year party goers planning to end 2020 at the beach.
State police commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the conditional movement control order is still being enforced.
He said that he expected many will head down to the beach given that it has become a culture for many Sabahans to do so during the new year’s eve.
“Sabah police wish to remind that new year celebrations involving gatherings in public places like recreational parks and beaches are not allowed,” he said here today.
“This is based on the order of Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on December 28.”
Thousands of people usually head to the Tanjung Aru beach to celebrate and observe the countdown towards midnight of December 31, holding barbecues and partying till late.
Hazani said 260 teams from the General Operations Force with multipurpose vehicle patrol car units will make sure the public maintain the health-related standard operating procedures.
“Anyone found flouting SOPs will be fined and will be ordered to disperse,” he said.
Those who break SOPs risk being fined up to RM1,000 each.
Hazani also warned the public not to engage in any water activities in the sea like swimming due to the weather alert issued by the meteorological department.
Heavy rain and strong winds with speeds of 40kph to 50kph and waves up to 3.5m in height are expected to hit Sabah from today until January 2. – The Vibes, December 30, 2020
