SABAH police have rejected plans for two peaceful rallies at Menara Kinabalu, citing safety concerns for visitors attending a carnival at the site.
State police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the decision was made after considering the potential risks to women and children attending the New Year eve carnival organised by the state.
“The carnival will attract visitors from all walks of life, including mothers, children, and the elderly. Allowing these rallies to proceed could create a chaotic and unsafe environment,” Jauteh told a press conference in Kota Kinabalu today.
Previously, The Vibes reported that three events, including two rallies, were scheduled to take place on New Year's Eve at the grounds of Menara Kinabalu, Sabah's administrative building.
The rallies were planned by Gerakan Mahasiswa and Gerakan Bangkit Sabahan, while the carnival is organised by the state’s Unit Pegawai Pembangunan Masyarakat (UPPM).
“We advised the organisers to complete their applications, but they have taken no action,” Jauteh said, adding that police have implemented measures to secure the area, including erecting barriers to prevent unauthorised entry.
“Our priority is the peace and well-being of carnival-goers. We don’t want any unforeseen incidents,” he said.
Jauteh urged organisers to reconsider their plans and use proper channels to express their concerns.
“Public assemblies in sensitive areas like this can cause unnecessary disturbances,” he said.
Access to the area will remain open, but authorities will maintain a strong presence to ensure public safety, he added. – December 30, 2024
