THE Malaysian Meteorological Department has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysian waters following an earthquake in the Tanimbar Islands region of Indonesia.

In a post on MetMalaysia’s official Facebook page this morning, the agency said the moderate earthquake occurred at 5.20am today.

Providing details of the incident, MetMalaysia said the epicentre was located at coordinates 8.1 degrees south latitude and 130.1 degrees east longitude.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.6, occurred at a depth of 81 kilometres.

MetMalaysia advised the public to refer to its official social media platforms or its website, mygempa.met.gov.my, for further information and updates. - February 7, 2026
