PAS Perlis has formally requested to appoint coordinators for three Perlis state assembly seats currently without sitting members, namely Guar Sanji, Bintong, and Simpang Empat.
The state’s Chief Minister, Abu Bakar Hamzah, confirmed receiving the letter from PAS through the party’s Perlis Commissioner, Ahmad Ali. He also noted that similar proposals had been received from the Perikatan Nasional state leadership and the State Assembly Action Council.
Commenting on PAS’s submission, Abu Bakar said the party had proposed former Chief Minister and current Sanglang assemblyman Mohd Shukri Ramli as coordinator for DUN Guar Sanji, replacing the former assemblyman, Mohd Ridzuan Hashim.
“PAS also nominated Santan assemblyman Muhammad Azmir Azizan as coordinator for DUN Chuping, and Kayang assemblyman Asrul Aimran Abd Jalil for DUN Bintong,” he said after attending the East Wind Festival launch at Dataran Kangar Jaya yesterday.
Abu Bakar emphasised that the state government, in considering proposals from multiple sources, was committed to avoiding political disputes while seeking to harmonise the state’s political environment.
As an interim measure, he said, the state EXCO decided last week to appoint local penghulus as overseers at each Chief Minister’s Service Centre established in the three vacant constituencies.
“The appointment of the penghulus is temporary, with each area managed by the Chief Minister’s Political Secretary until the courts decide on the status of the three former assembly seats, whether they are truly vacant or otherwise,” he explained.
Abu Bakar, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of Perikatan Nasional Perlis, assured residents in the affected constituencies that they could liaise with the appointed penghulus or contact the Chief Minister’s Office directly.
The proposal has sparked discussion following the circulation of PAS’s nomination letters, particularly given the party’s earlier refusal to accept any positions within Abu Bakar’s state administration.
The move reflects ongoing efforts to manage party relations in Perlis, where PAS and Perikatan Nasional navigate delicate alliances while ensuring continuity of governance in the absence of elected representatives for key state assembly seats. - February 8, 2026
