PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a stark warning about the threat of racial and religious division, urging Malaysians to preserve unity amid a global rise in extremist ideologies.
Speaking at the National Unity Ministry’s monthly assembly on Monday, Anwar highlighted the intensifying wave of fascism, racism, and Islamophobia in Europe and the United States, noting that hatred against minorities and different religions has even spread among educated communities.
"Do not underestimate this. Look at what is happening in Europe and the United States now. The rise of fascism and racism is growing stronger, along with hatred of minorities, Islamophobia, and other religions," he said.
Anwar expressed particular concern over the fact that such sentiments are sometimes adopted without rational or informed thought.
"The sentiments that drag issues of race and religion are stronger even without a foundation in knowledge. This is a major challenge we face, and it is not easy. It requires strength and wisdom," he added.
He emphasised that national peace and stability form the foundation for economic growth and public welfare.
"If the country is safe and stable, only then can we focus on development. All of this is interconnected — nothing can proceed if the economy is weak or failing to generate meaningful returns," he said.
The Prime Minister underlined the necessity of coupling political stability with sound economic policy to attract foreign investment and cultivate human capital.
"Stable politics, correct economic policies, and concentrated economic activity will allow us to attract foreign investment and equip our young people with the new skills required," he said.
Anwar also stressed the central role of the National Unity Ministry in fostering societal tolerance and cohesion.
"This Ministry must emerge as the best example of unity," he said, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding Malaysia against divisions that could threaten harmony and development. - February 9, 2026
