THE body of a newborn baby girl, believed to have been born at full term and still attached to her umbilical cord, was discovered in a public toilet at Taman Bandaraya Bukit Serindit in Melaka on Friday morning, prompting a police investigation.

The infant was found at approximately 9.40am by a cleaning worker assigned to the toilet facilities.

The baby had been wrapped in a prayer garment and placed inside a bag before the discovery was reported to the authorities.

The Duyong state assemblyman, Mohd Noor Helmy, expressed his sorrow over the incident in a Facebook post, describing it as deeply distressing.

As of now, police have not issued an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the case. Investigations are being conducted by the Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) under the Criminal Investigation Department at the Melaka Police Contingent Headquarters. - February 13, 2026
