THE recent expulsion of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and sixteen other leaders from Bersatu does not automatically affect their standing in Parliament, officials have confirmed, unless the party formally submits a request to the Dewan Rakyat for action to be taken.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said today that the Parliament has not yet received any documentation or formal application from Bersatu regarding the expelled members.
“If that occurs, if Bersatu writes to us and requests action, Parliament will investigate according to the rules and laws in force,” he told local media.
The clarification comes amid questions surrounding Hamzah, the former Deputy President of Bersatu, who currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition and Member of Parliament for Larut.
Despite his expulsion, he retains his parliamentary seat and position unless the procedural requirements are formally triggered.
Last Friday, Hamzah and sixteen party officials were dismissed from BERSATU membership by the party’s Disciplinary Board. The decision was communicated to BERSATU President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin by the Board’s chairman, Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan, through a notice titled “Notification of Disciplinary Board Decision Regarding Alleged Constitutional Breach.”
The expulsions have raised questions about whether the affected MPs, including Hamzah, would be reclassified under the Independent bloc in Parliament if their new status is officially recognised.
Attention has also focused on whether a formal motion has been submitted to the Speaker’s office to review Hamzah’s role as Leader of the Opposition in light of recent party developments.
According to parliamentary convention, an MP typically remains in their seat and position until an official notice is received by the Speaker’s office confirming any change in status. - February 18, 2026
