POLICE have arrested a 67-year-old man suspected of vandalising 12 automated teller machines across Jinjang, bringing to a close a string of incidents that caused tens of thousands of ringgit in damage.
Sentul police chief, Basri Sagoni, said officers were first alerted on Feb 16 after receiving a report that the screens of four ATMs at a bank in Jinjang Selatan had been smashed.
“Losses were estimated to be around RM4,000. On Feb 17, the police received four additional reports of vandalism at two more banks in Jinjang Selatan and two in Jinjang Utara. Those losses have been estimated to be around RM60,000,” he said in a statement yesterday.
In total, 12 ATMs were reported damaged in the incidents spanning the two neighbourhoods.
According to police, the suspect’s method involved entering banking premises and smashing ATM screens with an object believed to be a stone before fleeing the scene.
“The modus operandi involved the suspect entering the area, smashing the ATM screen using an object believed to be a stone, and then fleeing the scene.
“No other criminal elements have been detected so far.”
Following further investigations, officers detained the suspect in Sentul yesterday.
“Upon questioning, the suspect said he committed the act because he was dissatisfied after failing to withdraw money from the ATM.
“With the arrest of the suspect, the police have successfully solved five reported cases of ATM screen vandalism,” he said. - February 19, 2026
