THE government has strongly condemned a social media post in which a university student allegedly desecrated the Quran on the platform Threads, describing the act as an affront to Islam and a threat to the multiethnic harmony of the nation.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, speaking on Facebook, called the behaviour “rude, disrespectful towards Islam, and provocative to the sensitivities and harmony of Malaysia’s multiracial society.”
The post was reportedly uploaded under the account name ryandaselva and has since gone viral.
“I have instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct an immediate investigation and take prompt action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” Fahmi stated.
He further explained that MCMC would coordinate closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to ensure a comprehensive and uncompromising response in accordance with the law.
“Any action that touches on religious sensitivities and threatens public order is completely unacceptable,” he emphasised.
The directive follows the circulation of the offensive content on social media, prompting swift government intervention.
Fahmi, who is also the spokesperson for the Madani Government, reiterated that authorities would take stringent measures against the individual responsible.
“The government strongly condemns this incident involving the person who uploaded content desecrating the Quran on the social media platform Threads.
Such behaviour is rude, insults Islam, and challenges the sensitivities and harmony of our multiracial society. I have ordered an immediate investigation and action by MCMC under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Any act that touches on religious sensitivities and threatens public order is entirely unacceptable,” he wrote in the Facebook post.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with both MCMC and PDRM involved to ensure that the individual responsible is held accountable under existing laws. - February 25, 2026
