AUTHORITIES will increase its national rice reserves to cover up to nine months of supply as a precautionary step to safeguard food security in light of escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the decision was approved by the Cabinet as an early measure to ensure the country’s food supply remains stable if the conflict in the region persists.
“The Cabinet has agreed that the country’s rice stock will be increased to cover the next nine months from now.
“This is an early step to ensure the nation’s food supply remains secure,” he said during a press conference following a special Cabinet meeting here today.
The move forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food resilience and prepare for potential disruptions to global supply chains triggered by ongoing instability in the Middle East.
Despite these concerns, Mohamad Sabu assured the public that Malaysia currently has sufficient food supplies, particularly as the country approaches the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
He said key staples including rice, chicken, vegetables and fruits are expected to remain adequately available until at least May or June.
“For now, there is no need for us to worry about anything. Let us celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri calmly while practising moderation as advised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“The situation regarding rice, chicken meat, eggs, fish, beef, buffalo meat, fresh milk, vegetables and fruits is sufficient at least until May and June. Therefore, the people do not need to panic,” he said.
The minister added that the government will continue monitoring supply levels and market conditions closely to ensure that essential food items remain stable and accessible to Malaysians. - March 13, 2026
